Conductors of the Moving World by Brad Zellar

 Conductors of the Moving World is a really beautiful new book from Alec Soth's Littlebrownmushroom imprint.

 Made by hand in an edition of just 500 I would have recommended you rush out and buy one, unfortunately it sold out yesterday. Good news for the Japanese Tsunami relief (which is where all the proceeds are going) but bad news for tardy book collectors!

 Like the earlier Bedknobs and Boomsticks by Trent Parke this will no doubt be turning up on Amazon with a vastly inflated price before long.

In the autumn of 1972, a delegation of Japanese police officials visited the United States to study traffic control in several large cities, including New York, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. The unofficial photographer for the delegation was Eizo Ota, an inspector with the law enforcement department of the Yamanashi Prefecture, and he produced a record of the group’s travels that might best be described as forensic tourism.

Using Inspector Ota’s snapshots as launching points, Brad Zellar plundered traffic manuals, haiku anthologies, the Watergate transcripts, and The Godfather for textual inspiration. The mysterious result is a Zen travelogue through 1972 America.

From a collection of 60 C-Prints, a mix-and-match assortment of 17 will be hand-tipped into individual volumes, making each book a singular work of art.

Postcards from America limited edition

Broken Manual Special Edition by Alec Soth and Lester B. Morrison

 Having been part of the display in Soth's show at the Walker Art Center my copy of this special edition has just arrived today!

 The book is bound in a carved out section of an old large book, each is different, mine is in a copy of David O. Selznick's Hollywood. Absolutely love the way the book is hidden behind the gatefold of cinema curtains at the beginning of the book, this kind of attention to detail is continued throughout.

 Underneath the copy of Broken Manual there is hidden a Liberation Billfold Manifest, which in turn hides a family photograph with the father's head scratched out. This is also where the book case is signed and numbered.

 Inside the Broken Manual there is a 10x8 print, signed and numbered on the back by Soth and Morrison.

And finally the back cover is stamped, signed and numbered by Soth.

 The book literally only arrived an hour ago so I have not had time to fully absorb it yet, this is quite a rarity compared to some other photobooks, there is actually some real content here, rather than just a feast for the eyes.

 I ordered my copy of this as soon as it was announced, since then the price has doubled. Copies are still available from Steidl and Little Brown Mushroom for £600 €750 $950. These prices may seem high, but when compared to the increasing value of Soth's backlist it still looks good value to me.

Brighton Bunny Boy by Carmen Soth

This is a fun little zine by Carmen Soth - not sure how much input dad Alec had, but he has published it through Little Brown Mushroom. No doubt my wife thinks I'm mad for paying money for this, my daughter liked it though! (and it was only $7)

Alec and Carmen Soth Brighton Picture Hunt limited edition print

Like my previous post about Rinko Kawauchi Brighton Picture Hunt is another limited edition print produced by Photoworks Editions for the Brighton Photo Biennial exhibition Strange and Familiar: Three Views of Brighton, this one by Alec Soth, with the help of his daughter Carmen.

Once again it comes in a small edition of just 50 for only £150 and is signed and numbered on the reverse by Alec and Carmen Soth.

Alec Soth - Broken Manual special edition

Newly announced from Steidl is another new book by Alec Soth.

Broken Manual comes in a standard paperback edition, but also a very special edition on 300, encased inside another book and including a 10x8 signed and numbered print.

Available for pre-order now, these will be part of Soth's exhibit at the Walker Art Center until January 2011. The first 50 copies are available at a reduced price of £350 or $500 get yours here.

Alec Soth - One Mississippi

One Mississippi by Alec Soth is part of the Nazraeli Press One Picture Book series.

These books do have more than one picture, but the one referred to is a signed original photograph included with each of the books.

The pictures in the book are previously unpublished photographs from the famed Sleeping by the Mississippi series, which has now been through three sold out editions.
